Mpact, Southern Africa’s largest paper and plastic packaging and recycling business, requires strict contamination control for reliable trace-metal analysis of food-contact materials. Its traditional manual acid-cleaning process presented challenges in terms of cleaning time, acid consumption, operator safety, and hazardous waste management.
Microwave Labstation
The extraction of dioxins and furans from fly ash presents significant analytical challenges due to the complexity of this environmental matrix. Generated during waste incineration processes, these persistent organic pollutants (POPs) can accumulate in fly ash collected by air pollution control systems, making reliable sample preparation essential for environmental monitoring. This application report investigates the use of Milestone’s ETHOS X microwave extraction system, equipped with the SR-15 extraction rotor and glass vial kit, for the determination of dioxins and furans in fly ash samples. The study evaluates the extraction performance using certified fly ash reference material (BCR®-490), following US EPA Method 3546. The experimental procedure involves microwave-assisted solvent extraction with a toluene-acetone mixture and sulfuric acid-impregnated silica, followed by sample clean-up and analysis using gas chromatography-high-resolution mass spectrometry (GC-HRMS). Particular attention is given to analytical recovery, repeatability, and extraction efficiency, as well as the role of microwave-assisted extraction in simplifying sample preparation for this challenging environmental matrix.
The extraction of dioxins from environmental samples presents significant analytical challenges, particularly due to the memory effect and carryover contamination between extraction runs. Conventional extraction techniques often require extensive cleaning procedures to prevent cross-contamination, increasing laboratory workload and affecting overall productivity. This application report investigates the use of Milestone’s ETHOS X microwave extraction system, equipped with the fastEX-24 rotor and disposable glass vials, for the extraction of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs) and dibenzofurans (PCDFs) from environmental matrices. The study evaluates the extraction performance using certified sandy soil reference material (BCR®-529), following US EPA Method 3546. Particular attention is given to analytical recovery, reproducibility, and the potential for carryover between consecutive extraction runs. The report describes the experimental procedure, extraction conditions, and GC-MS analytical methodology, examining the role of disposable glass vials in addressing memory effects and simplifying routine sample preparation for dioxin determination.
